I can't remember where I read it, but it really hit me hard: if Jesus was an actor, what would you, as director, feel comfortable in asking Him to do? Would you ask Him, for instance, to French-kiss another actor who wasn't His wife in real life? Wh…

I guess it all depends on the kind of project that you are going for. If it is independent project, then it's best to seek independent funding. But the key is almost always is to sell the film by means of visualization. It's hard to get any investor…

About Me:
I'm married with 2 kids and currently studying Communications (Broadcast Media) at Avondale College (SDA tertiary institution in Australia). I have a previous degree in social work and 10 years experience in that field. I'm working on a screenplay in between assignments and wondering what God has in store for me in the future. I'd love to get my hands dirty doing something media-oriented overseas for a spiritually-minded organisation.

Thanks for the message Kent. If you stick to what your learn in your spanish courses you'll make it anywhere in Latin America, haha j/k. I just wanted to say, nice comment, and that I agree with you on the fact that Mexico and Australia are very far apart. On the other hand, I'd like to encourage this website, we never know when and where God will bring us together to get his job done, He always has a time for everything. So far, I can say that I am glad Stephen created this website. I believe that something great is about to happen, we just need to wait patiently for God's perfect timing... These are some of my thoughts!

Hasta Pronto Amigo!

I will definitely explore GMI's site more and if I can locate those books I'll be more than happy to add to my growing library.

Travelling the world is also a dream of mine. Not sure when it's gonna happen but one day, God willing, I will. Hope you will get the opportunity to do so as well.

By the way, your spanish isn't too bad. At least you know a lil something. Lol. Take care....Nadia

Hey Kent,

Lol. What a coincidence with the name.

I wish I could update you on what GMI’s influence on this end is but I’m not sure myself. I don’t think the organization’s ministry directly (and I say this loosely because maybe I have just not been aware) affects this country or its neighbours. It’s definitely something I’m going to check out though.

As it relates to your volunteering I think Guyana or Grenada are good choices. Don’t let your lack of Spanish be a deterrent though. My sister went to Peru for a year to teach English without knowing how to speak the language and came back basically fluent. So if you feel called to go to say Colombia or Venezuela consider it.

You heard right about Adventism within this region. For the most part we’re saturated (not to say that there is still no need for evangelism). In Jamaica there is an Adventist church practically everywhere you go, whether in country or in town. It’s how it is here.
And yes, we tend to be a bit conservative in the Caribbean where church is concerned. But I think it’s not as bad as it used to be. For me and a lot of persons it’s neither here nor there. You come to church dressed modestly and that’s it, the tie or hat thing not an issue. So I wouldn’t be overly concerned about that part.

Just follow God’s leading and you’ll know what to do, where to go. I’m still trying to sort out how and when I’d like to volunteer my services. Have you ever done it before? i.e. volunteer outside home? I always think about it but then I don’t know if I can, what move to make, etc, etc. Guess one day I’ll figure it out, hopefully soon.

Thank you for stopping by and for your well wishes. All the best to you and take care. God bless....Nadia

Yes, doccos and true stories generally are likely to be a focus for me. I have quite a few ideas but probably need experience and some skilled collaborators before any of it will make it into the mainstream. But I agree: my background in social work is likely to assist with projects that have a more "social realism" angle.

Avondale has a good introductory course to media but would drive anyone crazy who wanted to concentrate on a particular medium in depth. In that way it's good for me because I'm still not completely sure what direction I want to take this thing.

During my current internship with Adventist Media Network (Sydney), making programs for Hope Channel, I've had to accept that it's concepts, planning, networking and scripts that are my strengths - the more language-based stuff rather than the technical side. Although I guess I'm a competent editor (but again in the creative sense rather than the technical sense). Check out my Melissa Otto video on this site. That's probably my best work so far.

I really want to focus on mission somehow. I just wish I knew exactly what God has in mind.

Hi Kent,

I actually took my Master of Media Arts & Production at UTS down in Sydney, great school, great teachers. I had a chance to stop by Avondale once while driving from Sydney to the Gold Coast, I wondered what type of media program they had.

Ever thought about doing docos? I would think that with your experience you'd be able to find some great stories and come at it with an understanding others might not posses.

Hope you enjoyed your Aussie holiday!

Yeah, Avondale's pretty good. It's a very practical course but a bit under-funded. Avondale's focus is fairly firmly on theology, education and nursing. Communication is a bit of an add on and only has a small amount of students. We have some good times though.

It'd be nice if Avondale offered a fully fledged journalism or film-making degree. Instead, our Communications course is a bit of a broad introduction. It works for me right now though, I guess.

I'm hoping to nail a 6 month internship with the Adventist Media Network in Sydney - that should go a long way towards boosting my experience.

Social work has given me insight into a lot of areas of life that most sheltered middle class Adventists never get to experience - prisons, drugs, child abuse, etc. It probably does colour my perspective and, inevitably, the kind of stories that ring true for me. When I'm finished the screenplay I'm on I'd like to turn my attention to a script about a traumatised WW2 vet and a refugee Vietnamese heroin addict who find understanding and (ahem) redemption in an unlikely friendship with one another.

I just saw "About Schmidt" (2002) on DVD last night. I was really blown away by the subtlety, the characterisation and the departure from the usual movie cliches. Somehow they got away with the whole African sponsor child thing without falling into sentimentality. I'd love to be a part of making movies like that!

Looking forwarding to hanging out with you and the others in Adventist Filmmaker cyberspace.

Hi Kent,

Welcome! Good to have you join us. I was in Australia a couple years ago on vacation and got a chance to stop by Avondale. I've heard they have a strong media program. How is your experience there been so far? I'd love to talk to you sometime about your passion for storytelling. I'm sure your social work experience will provide you with an endless amount of material for film projects. Thanks for joining and I hope you find this site a helpful tool to network, share your work, and find inspiration.
