Adventist Filmmaker

Hey guys I am going to apply to Pacific Union College because I want to have an Adventist education and I know that P.U.C. is a wonderful place to get a film degree. Godwilling I will be there in Fall 2010 and I am counting the days till then. I need to strenthen my faith in Adventism because in Indianapolis I have been able to grow spritually and I know that an Adventist College is a great place to grow closer to God. My cousin goes to Southern and she is learning and growing there. So all the P.U.C. students I would like to hear how things are going for you and do you have any advice for me because I am still praying about this decision.

we just got some new teachers, one of whom is on this site. Rodney Vance has his MFA in Playwriting. Our department has just gotten really good. I just joined it this year at PUC but i love it. This is my third year at PUC, but first in the film program, and although my focus is theatre, i am really enjoying the new aspect that film gives me.

Thank you for the advice Mike and Gary. I did not grow up in the Adventist Church, so I want to strengthen my belief in the doctrine before I go out into the world of filmmaking, so that I will not compromise my faith for anything.

Mike I will follow your advice of doing internships and Gary I will do my very best keeping Christ first. He truly is my rock and I am a lover of Christ before I am an Adventist. Christ was with me before I found the Adventist Church and Godwilling I will be with Him in Heaven walking on the beach with Him for eternity. Thank you Gary for reminding me that the most important thing I do is keep Christ in my heart that is the best advice anyone could give a person.

you are absolutely right Gary, I personally felt that I grew much more as a Christian when I left the Adventist system, but everyone follows a different path. Academically the Adventist schools didn't offer what I was looking for in an education, luckily I was able to find programs that really suited me and my learning style.

Hi Maria, I spent 10 years in the Napa Valley and found my wife while working at PUC so it can be a wonderful place. I also have been witness to the flip side and I can tell you from experience that if you place your confidence in the school, the people, the place or the programs, your world can get shaken and you may attribute it to the school, the people, the place, the programs and perhaps even God will get blamed.

Keep your focus on Christ and, in spite of your evolving situation, you will have a rock to hold on to.

Hi Maria, I attended PUC for 2 years and first I'd say take classes from Dr. Victoria Mukerji. I was lucky enough to be in the first film class she taught at PUC and she really opened up my eyes to film which got me on my current path. Also, do internships, as many as possible and make connections. I did no internships while in University and that was a mistake on my part.

As with any University, you will find what you want to find (advice I'm sure you've heard before). That being said, Northern California and the Napa Valley are some of the finest places to live on earth. I often wish that I was lucky enough to live there.

Hope that was at least slightly helpful.
